Overview
Oral Pathology is a core subject, the link between basic science and clinical dentistry and medicine. Oral Pathology is that part of pathology and a branch of dentistry concerned with the scientific study of the causes and effects of oral diseases an understanding of which is essential for diagnosis and for the development of rational treatment and preventive programmes.
The state of art department is well equipped with the best equipments like adequate number of microscopes,microscopic slides, study models, charts,hard and soft tissue specimens for undergraduate training. The department also possesses fine infrastructure like pathology museum, research microscopes with polarizing, phase contrast, photomicrographic and pentahead attachments required for post graduate training and research purposes. The well equipped clinical, heamatolgical, microbiological, histo and immunohistochemical laboratories aid to develop standard reports in diagnosis and interpret clinical findings.

The department of Oral Pathology and Microbiology cadres in the field of academics, research and diagnosis. The first exposure for the 1st year BDS student to the field of dentistry is laid here. 1st to 3rd year BDS students are trained in this department with respect to tooth anatomy, histology, physiology, pathology and forensic sciences. Postgraduates are trained to excel in the field of diagnosis and research. The department has dental clinic with four dental chairs and sterilization unit. The department is well equipped with 50 monocular microscopes, 12 binocular microscopes, 1 trinocular with adapter for photomicrography, 1 stereomicroscope and 1 research microscope. The department has approximately 2760 microscopic slides and teaching aids like overhead projectors, slide projectors and LCD screen. The department museum houses numerous wet specimens, cast and tooth specimen. The department also maintains a separate library. Diagnostic procedures in the fields of cytology, biopsy and hematology are carried out in the department and also advanced methods such as immunohistochemical staining. The specialty of department is screening and reporting of excisional specimen of oral cancer. Every year National Oral Pathologist day is celebrated on 25th February with a motive to create awareness about our specialization.
